Connecting Your Reading World

Swipe through a tailored book selection, connect with fellow readers, and explore new genres through a user-friendly interface. BookMatch started out as a reimagination of Goodreads, a platform for book enthusiasts, with the main user base aged 18-34. This younger demographic not only meant being able to shed the outdated and cluttered aesthetics of the current app but also being able to introduce a swipe function that makes it easier than ever to find new reads.

Overview

  • My Role: I went solo on this project, everything from research to prototyping and testing was done by me.
  • Timeline: 1 week
  • Team scope: Just me

The problem

  • While Goodreads is a beloved platform for book readers, myself included, the platform has become dated in both aesthetics and functionality. While I understand wanting to preserve their brand identity, Goodreads risks falling behind as new, more visually engaging apps enter inevitably enter the market.
  • This problem is exacerbated when one considers their core user base being made out of young adults used to a more engaging and streamlined experience. They require an interface that is not only visually appealing but also facilitates easier discovery of literary content. I therefore wanted to design a product that addresses these issues and makes browsing books something the user can do without a second thought—effortlessly engaging, like swiping through a favorite social media feed while retaining the core features that allow Goodreads to have the community engagement that it does.

Methods & Testing

  • Research: Online resources and direct interviews with current Goodreads users helped me identify user needs and pain points.
  • Data into Tools: I created three user personas that represent the core userbase and utilised blueprints and journey maps to transition from current user experiences to an envisioned future where their needs are fully addressed.
  • Iterative Prototyping: I conducted iterative testing using figma with participants aged 20-29. This approach allowed me to gather insights on how the core userbase interacts with the app.

The Solution

An app that maintains Goodreads core functions while introducing an engaging swiping mechanism akin to the one of datings apps. BookMatch encourages users to explore a curated selection of books tailored to their preferences, making the process of discovering the perfect read more intuitive and rewarding. With a user-friendly interface and a vibrant community, users can dive into a world of books that suits their tastes and connect with like-minded readers.
